African-American Culture and History: Lessons & Resources [web resource]

In honor of Black History Month, the National Education Association has assembled a collection of educational materials to help K-12 educators integrate African-American culture and history into the curriculum.

Content is organized by grades K-5, grades 6-8, and grades 9-12. Each section includes several lesson plans, background resources for social studies, the arts, science, and sports, quizzes, printables, and links to video and audio files.

Lesson plans cover a variety of topics. Sample content includes:

Musical Harlem
Students in grades K-4 listen to jazz audio clips to learn to identify styles and musicians associated with the Harlem Renaissance.

Celebrate African American Heritage
Lessons, activities, and resources for grades K-5.

In Motion: The African American Migration Experience
Students in grades 6-8 participate in lessons and activities organized around thirteen defining migrations that have formed and transformed African America and the nation.

Variation in Human Skin Color
Students in grades 9-12 explore factors controlling human skin color variation and how perceived racial differences affect human society. Student and teacher materials are included.

The Invisible Man
Students in grades 11-12 read Ralph Ellison’s novel to explore the theme of invisibility in the book, in their own lives, and in their communities.
