Inside an Evaluation for Learning Disorders [video]

When a child is struggling in school, the first step to finding help is figuring out what’s getting in his way. As a starting point, you need an evaluation of your child’s learning profile, to identify strengths and weaknesses, and suggest what kind of support he might need to thrive. To help parents understand the process, Dr. Matthew Cruger, the senior director of the Learning and Development Center at the Child Mind Institute, teamed up with Understood.org to walk us through the process. In this video he shares clips from a real evaluation, and explains what’s going on at each step.

In a follow-up webinar, Dr. Cruger answers questions from parents, including those listed below.

  • Why are kids referred for a learning evaluation?
  • Who can do an evaluation?
  • What are the components of an evaluation?
  • How long does an evaluation take?
  • When does a child need a neuropsychological evaluation?
  • What skills are you testing for?
  • Why is it that if the school thinks a child might have ADHD, they won’t diagnose it, but will suggest that the family talk to their pediatrician?
  • If you’re looking for a private evaluation, how do you find a good evaluator?

You may read the answers to the questions above on the Child Mind Institute website.
